Regarding This Weekend

Just heard from the Wee that 100 Damned Guns had to cancel their show tonight due to a flight delay. Thanks a lot, weather. As of now, the show is still set to go on with the Naptime Shake and Zapruder Sequence.

Also, Ye Olde MySpace coughed up a bulletin citing that Pleasant Grove will not be performing tomorrow night at the Double-Wide...due to sickness, not weather. The Zac Crain benefit will live on however and we got a flyer! (see post below)

you gotta love those wacky bookmaking brits. it seems that they've already started calculating the odds and taken bets on whether or not our favorite spectacled wizard will survive the final book. and yes, the masses seem to believe that harry is indeed the final horcrux and will be killed by voldermort (not so sad when you realize that he will be reunited with his parents and the others who have died in the past books). but don't worry -- if harry survives, all bets will be void and money will be returned.

trying to figure out what my favorite albums for the year would just be a pain in the ass, and it would most likely come out looking like a lot of other people's lists anyway, so let's just skip over that. instead, i bring you my top 10 album titles. sure, some of these releases were better than others (and probably none of them would be in my top 5), but dammit, they have good titles. and i like judging a book by it's cover.

Hello? Um, Do We Need a Good Proofread?

I was excited to find in this missive the new title for the final Harry Potter installment...release date to come. What I was horrified to find, however, were several godawful errors in the story.

When telling readers how to find the Hangman game on Rowling's site, the paragraph reads:

"In the mirror, you'll see a hallway. Click on the farthest doorknob and look for the Christmas tree. They click on the center of the door next to the mirror and a reef appears. Then click on the top of the mirror and you'll see a garland."

Obviously, the writer meant to say "then" instead of "they". But, "a reef"?! C'mon! I, for one, saw no coral, but rather a lovely holiday decorative item. Hrmph. Did I do something wrong?

i'm going to try really hard to not get into the whole arguement of whether or not we should say "merry christmas" or "happy holidays" or take down the trees or hang every symbol we can find. i was raised in a household where christmas meant a tree with tinsel and a turkey, and that was about it. i don't even remember ever believing in santa, disappointing as it sounds. so i'm one of those people who's not going to be offended either way. at the same time, i'm aware that other people do have strong beliefs when it comes to things like that, and my judgement of their "overreaction" is about as useful as the overreaction itself. but here's the thing:

i see this article in the new york times this morning. basically a teen didn't like the fact that his teacher was "preaching" in class, and tape recorded eight different classes, and in one of them the teacher said:

“If you reject his gift of salvation, then you know where you belong,” Mr. Paszkiewicz was recorded saying of Jesus. “He did everything in his power to make sure that you could go to heaven, so much so that he took your sins on his own body, suffered your pains for you, and he’s saying, ‘Please, accept me, believe.’ If you reject that, you belong in hell.”

to a classroom of students, mind you. and i'm gonna have to go out on a limb here and say not all of those students are christians, in whatever form their teacher thinks they should be. which sucks if you ask me. and right now it appears as though everyone's mad at the student if i were a high school kid and my teacher told me i was going to hell in the middle of class, i probably would have broken down in tears, especially coming from an authority figure like that. i mean, really? this from a man who's supposed to be teaching a class about the constitution, of all things. nice one, mr. paszkiewicz.

Video Games Are Bad

Anyone who knows me is quite aware that I have a predilection for stupidly injuring myself. ...Must have been quitting the ballet, I dunno. I've broken things, sprained things, achieved concussions, pulled things and come up with various other embarassing injuries that I occasionally am remembered to ("Hey, I remember that time you tripped on a biscuit and broke your nose!" That didn't exactly happen, but it's that type of thing.)

This is why I feel for these Wii people...and why I don't have one.

i'm sure that everyone has already heard, but i just found out that peter boyle died yesterday. i'm entirely too sad to hear about this. that's all i have to say at the moment.

a non-local, but still very important, benefit

so i got this message from desoto recently regarding callum robbins, the son of j. robbins and janet morgan (of channels these days). a few months ago he was diagnosed with type 1 sma, or spinal muscular atrophy, an as-yet uncurable and usually fatal desease that affects kids. in addition to visits with conventional doctors and specialists, the couple is at the moment checking out alternative medines and therapies for cal. unfortunately things like this aren't covered by insurance, and and they need as much help as possible -- indie rocker engineers don't really make all that much money, even though they should. hell, if i gave them a dime for every time i listened to a jawbox or burning airlines song, i could probably pay for all sorts of treatments myself. alas, i'm a poor little girl. but at least i'm healthy. kim, bill and the desoto gang have set up a paypal account which you can reach from the cal robbins benefit page, with 100% of the donations going to the family to help them out with what will most definitely be a difficult battle.

after reading a little bit about the disease (as much as i could without getting all weepy at least), me and my broke-ass self made a donation. i'm posting this in case some of you wanted to help, but please don't feel obligated to do so in any way -- i just thought i'd put it out there for those of you who would want to to help out.

Say Cheese!

i used to read. a lot. just did. but for some reason i seem to have stopped somewhere along the way. not entirely stopped per se, but i only seem to finish a few books a year these days. and i keep meaning to get back to it.

once i finish watching buffy (i'm in season 3 now, but it's moving pretty quickly), i'm back on the book wagon. so here's where you people come in. i need some suggestions. here's a bit of info for you though: if it has a bronte, austen, or lawrence involved, i ain't buying. high school reading list stuff isn't going to work for me at the moment -- right now i'm looking for some entertainment. it doesn't have to be laugh-out-loud funny or anything (see below), but this is reading for enjoyment time. oh, and i'm also a sucker for good non-fiction and biographies.

i'm taking suggestions now, and then will most likely go out and use my usual xmas gift cards to stock up on some reading for '07, so get 'em in, folks!

and my suggestion for you all: happinessTM by will ferguson. i completely forgot how much i loved this book until i lent it to jason and started rereading it in the car.
